The Madison Heights United Methodist Church, led by the Rev. Thomas Taylor, is in the early stages of a community garden and farmers market slated to open in spring 2010, providing sustenance for families struggling in a tough economy while earning green-thumbed citizens some cash on the side.

Royal Oak Farmers Market
ROYAL OAK — The Royal Oak Farmers Market, 316 E. 11 Mile Road, features plants, fresh produce grown from the farmers who sell it, eggs, dairy products and antiques. The market is open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays until December.

First started in 1925 as a cooperative effort between Royal Oak and Oakland County, the market has been run solely by Royal Oak since 1997.

Shelby Farmers Market
SHELBY TOWNSHIP — The Downtown Development Authority began the second year of its farmers market at the Packard Proving Grounds in May, this year including Bigby Coffee in its offerings.

The market is open every Saturday through October from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the proving grounds, on the west side of Van Dyke Avenue, just north of 22 Mile Road. Admission is free.

The market features local farmers from nearby northern communities, like Romeo and Armada, as well as local artisans. Part of the proceeds from the market go to the Packard Proving Grounds Foundation to help restore the site.

Farmington Farmers Market
FARMINGTON — People can visit the Downtown Farmington Farmers and Artisans Market every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sundquist Pavilion in Riley Park. The market includes many flowers and plants, plus seasonal fruits and vegetables. The market also includes baked goods and local artisans’ crafts. The market takes place rain or shine.

The pavilion is at 33113 Grand River Ave., which is just east of Farmington Road in the heart of the downtown.

Rochester Farmers Market
The market, located at East Third and Water streets, marked its 10th annual opening May 2. It’ll be open every Saturday through Oct. 31, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Mount Clemens Farmers Market
The Mount Clemens Farmers Market, which has been open since 1979, features a variety of fruits, vegetables and flowers for sale. Many seasonal events are held at the market, such as the Apple Festival and the Spudtacular Pork-a-thon.

It is open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Friday and Saturday, from May through November. The market is located at the city’s Park and Ride lot, on North River Road, between I-94 and northbound Gratiot Avenue.

Warren Farmers Market
The city of Warren hosts a weekly Farmers Market at City Square Park, adjacent to City Hall, north of 12 Mile, just east of Van Dyke, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Sunday beginning in early May and running through Oct. 25.

The market boasts around 30 vendors selling an array of goods ranging from Michigan-grown produce, to salsas, jams and organic coffee, to a variety of handmade decorative crafts. The city also hosts a scaled-back version of the market from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon beginning in mid-July. Grosse Pointe Park — West Park Farmer’s Market
The West Park Farmer’s Market opened May 16 for its sixth season. Every Saturday through Sept. 26, visitors can purchase seasonal fruits, vegetables and flowers, and this year there are farmers selling organic meats, eggs, berries, vegetables, cheese and other items.

Costumed dog parades with gift certificates for best dressed pooches will take place at 10 a.m. July 4 with a patriotic costume theme, Aug. 22 with a black tie them and Sept. 26 with a Halloween costume theme.

Several special events are planned, including Learn a New Trade Day June 27, Tailgate Treasures July 18, Beer Taste Fest and Corn Roast Aug. 15 and closing day Sept. 26. Hours for special event days are 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Regular market hours are 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays, with extended hours for special events. The market takes place on Kercheval between Lakepointe and Beaconsfield.
