CHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP — Chesterfield Township police are asking for assistance in identifying a robber that got away with a grocery bag full of money Aug. 27.

Detective Sgt. Deron Myers said a lone man walked into the National City bank on 23 Mile Road, just west of I-94, around 3 p.m. Upon entering, the man pulled a red scarf over his face, approached a teller with a white plastic bag and said, “Put all your money in it.”

As of press time, police didn’t have any leads.

The suspect is described as a white male in his mid-20s with an athletic build. He was wearing a light-colored baseball cap, sunglasses and a dark-colored suit jacket. The crook did not speak of or brandish a weapon but kept one hand in his pocket during the robbery, insinuating to employees that he may be armed.

Myers said employees thought something was fishy when the suspect walked in wearing layers of clothing on such a hot day and told detectives the man appeared to be “clean-cut.”

“We don’t have any similar suspect descriptions,” said Myers. “At this time it’s an isolated robbery.”

An undisclosed amount of money was put into the suspect’s plastic bag without a dye pack. Although there were no patrons in the bank at the time, Myers said there were “tons” of people nearby and is hoping someone, perhaps walking to their car in the Lowe’s parking lot next door, may have seen something.

Employees of the National City did not see a getaway vehicle and did not notice if the man escaped on foot.

Myers said the robbery is under “active investigation” and that the FBI is also involved.

Chesterfield has not experienced any similar bank robberies as of late.
